Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald (Lord Grindewald If You’re Nasty) Trailer Review

This holiday season, and I mean the San Diego Comic Con holiday season where we get the best gifts, the newest trailer for the Fantastic Beasts saga dropped. I may be the only one who liked Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, but damnit if people don’t enjoy this one. This trailer makes the first movie look like the illest set up, prologue, foreword written by JK Rowling film, ever. Basically the first movie was like, just wait you need this one so it can get better – trust. Plus, that Wizarding World logo is straight fire!

So Many Easter Eggs

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald trailer gives you mystery, adrenaline, and tension with easter eggs and breadcrumbs in a full lunch size meal to devour. I mean the trailer credits give us a flash of the deathly hallows symbol in smoke and even in the title the deathly hallows are everywhere! This whole Fantastic Beasts franchise got me… It got me!!

It starts out with Newt Scamander as a yute in Hogwarts with Dumbledore as his professor, teaching defense against the dark arts I presume. Now, it seems like he was a mentor to Scamander, but if I know anything about Dumbledore from the Harry Potter series, it’s that he makes you feel like his actions are supposed to make you a stronger and better wizard, but really it’s to serve his own agendas.

I digress, we start with Scamander as a youth seeing a bit more about his introverted character, his absolute love of beasts and his fear of a desk job… But there is a greater fear out there in the present day, Grindelwald. Last we saw he was captured, but a skilled wizard like that doesn’t stay caught. I’m already excited to see how he gets out of this wizard sleeper choke hold.

Lord Grindewald If You’re Nasty

We then get thrown into the world of Grindelwald, he’s on that world domination with a real plan tip. Not the, I’ve been hurt in life and want the world to pay Lord Voldemort plan, but that with the Deathly Hallows combined I can rule the world plan. At first, you think, oh right Johnny Depp as Grindelwald OF COURSE (sarcastically), but yea – Of course! I believe this plan, the man who brought me Edward Scissorhands, Captain Jack and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas – it was just a matter of time before he made his way to the Wizarding world.

This time he is teaming up with our friend Credence Barebone role reprised by Ezra Miller. Credence being the wizard who was able to harness the raw unchecked power of a stifled youngin. There are new characters, new drama, and new beasts!

Dumbledore calls upon Newt Scamander played again by Eddie Redmayne to stop Grindelwald, I’m a little confused as to why he would ask Newt for this, maybe because he is good at tracking monsters? But that sly look in Jude Law’s eye playing Dumbledore – naw I can’t trust it.

“I can’t move against Grindelwald, it has to be you,” don’t gimmie that nonsense. This movie is all about how the elder wand came into Dumbledore’s possession, cuz guess who already has it.

Yup Grindelwald, and why can’t Dumbledore do the work? Cuz that’s his ex and he doesn’t want to get his hands dirty quite yet. You know, he just got tenure as headmaster, it’s not a good look.

Lore For Days

It’s evident that the story will tie into the discrimination against muggles, which is the basis for evil actions in the wizarding world – #MugglesAreNotLesser. We see our muggle character, Jacob Kowalski played by Dan Fogler return, as well as the whole gang. Tina Goldstein, wizard detective in the first film played by Katherine Waterston, sister Queenie Goldstein played by Alison Sudol, and newcomers to the franchise, Theseus Scamander older brother of Newt played by Callum Turner – AND Zoe Kravitz playing… Leta Lestrange! YO – she’s a Lestrange!! If that doesn’t ring a bell… Bellatrix Lestrange played by Helena Bonham Carter, right-hand lady of the lord V… Yea this is her ancestor. I’m nerding out right now, literally, my nerd is showing and I don’t know if anyone else is as excited about this, I’m just a sucker for backstories and lore, it really tickles me.

Then the lore gets even better when Newt and Mr Kowalski are in the presence of Nicolas Flamel. If that is too deep of an easter egg for you, Nicolas Flamel is said to have discovered the Philosopher’s stone (Sorcerer’s Stone in the U.S.) and achieved immortality.

So we think it’s all about the elder wand and then you realize, damn we going 2 for 3 here. Maybe the rest of the world won’t be as easily amused as I am with this trailer, but I don’t care. To quote Janelle “I don’t really give a f#&!k if I was just the only one who likes that.” I’m gonna be there on November 11th wit my popcorn, and my wand that I bought from Ollivanders at Universal, my Marauders Map scarf, and my Gryffindor keychain – BASICALLY my personal deathly hallows cuz I’m that excited.
