New Year, New Binges, New on Netflix in January

As 2018 slinks off into the abyss, we’ll lose some good Netflix watches as we flip the longest year ever the finger. But before we pour one out for the lost we’ve gotta take a look at what’s coming in like a bright and shiny New Year’s baby.

Tidying Up with Marie Kondo – Streaming 1/1/19

If you’ve tried to get your life together since 2014, chances are you’ve read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo or at least heard of the KonMari method. If you haven’t, get with the program and watch this show. Marie Kondo, lover of all things decluttering, helps regular folks like us clear out the mess and choose a little more joy. 10/10 would binge on a down day.

COMEDIANS of the world – Streaming 1/1/19

Netflix takes you traipsing around the globe with this funny showcase featuring forty-seven comics. The series promises to tickle every funnybone and bring the laughs in eight different languages. With a set from star Nicole Byer, this one is sure to be a hoot.

Strong Black Lead

Black Earth Rising – Streaming 1/25/19

Michaela Coel brings her Black Girl Brilliance to this Netflix Original thriller. Coel plays an orphaned survivor of the Rwandan genocide seeking to reconnect with her African roots after being raised in London. The limited-run series also stars John Goodman (10 Cloverfield Lane, The Big Lebowski), Noma Dumezweni (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child), and Tamara Tunie (Law & Order: SVU, Flight). Get ready for a complex look at what happens when war crimes are prosecuted and how we deal with the scars of our pasts.

Liars & Scammers: Red Hats & Ham Sammiches

Carmen Sandiego – Streaming 1/18/19

The world’s greatest thief returns but this time she’s one of the goodies. Gina Rodriguez voices the titular character in this reboot and fourth TV show for the lady in red. Instead of being hunted by intrepid gumshoes, Carmen Sandiego pulls a Robin Hood and steals back from the evil corporation V.I.L.E. Also featuring the voice talents of Disney faves Miley Cyrus (Hannah Montana), Savannah Grace (Girl Meets World), and Lucas Grabeel (High School Musical, Halloweentown High) this new series promise to be a fun ride.

FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened – Streaming 1/18/19

We all remember watching it happen. The rich ready to live it up and instead getting stranded on random islands with only Kraft single sandwiches to show for it. And somehow JaRule was involved. Well, now Netflix promises to bring us the whole ugly and somehow still hilarious story. Buckle up, it’s sure to be a bumpy ride.

The Mummy & The Mummy Returns – Streaming 1/1/19

Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, and Oded Fehr are shining lights in this superior duo of campy remakes. Watch white people messing around with stuff they shouldn’t in Egypt. Creepy villain? Check. Squealy British sidekick? Yes. The Rock as a horrible CGI scorpion man? Abso-freaking-lutely. Watch these two. You’ll be happy you did.
