Ubisoft has released their next entry in the Assassin’s Creed series, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate. Set in London during the year 1868, it brings some totally new changes, such as a pair of interchangeable protagonists (who happen to be siblings), fun new toys like a grappling launcher, and more instinctive combat that focuses on using close-quarters weapons like brass knuckles and the hidden blade. Ubisoft has made a few new improvements and I feel they’re worth acknowledging.

carriage

Batman Meets Grand Theft Auto:

Getting around the land has always been a key thing for Assassin’s Creed and it gets pretty annoying when you have to run/walk everywhere and climb on 10-story buildings. Ubisoft has answered our prayers and made traveling easier. First off, there is GTA-style carriage driving where you can either use a cart from your allies or steal one from an innocent bystander. You can also crash into other carriages that are trying to attack you. It looks pretty funny actually. When it comes to climbing onto buildings or getting from building to building, you are equipped with a grappling hook, making you feel like the Dark Knight himself. Yes, it kind of takes away from the series’ parkour roots, but it does make life a lot easier.

twins

Dual Protagonists, Double the Fun:

Assassin twins Jacob and Evie Frye’s story missions cause you to play as one or the other. When it is time to do side missions, you get the choice to play as whichever twin you prefer. (Jacob is my favorite, don’t ask why!) They use many of the same tools but also have their own distinct combat styles and skills. Evie is great when doing stealth objectives and Jacob is great for combat! That doesn’t mean Evie can’t kick butt and Jacob can’t be sneaky once in a while. Jacob and Evie also combine their activities with a sense of fun and humor, making each mission fun in its own way.

combat

Quick Combat, or Die Tryin’:

I always felt betrayed when I would watch the fast-paced combat in Assassin’s Creed trailers and never experienced the same excitement in the games. Fortunately, Syndicate fully involves speed as a key combat component. Syndicate requires you to execute fast combat strikes and overwhelm enemies with melee weapons. Players can also rely on concealed weapons such as brass knuckles, the hidden blade, and a sword cane in order to quickly end fights in the streets of London.

There is still plenty of ground to cover in Syndicate. If you weren’t really an Assassin’s Creed fan, the improvements might not turn you into a believer. For those who felt very disappointed by Unity, I hope Syndicate will restore your faith in the Brotherhood again.
