The cosplay community has always been a place of creative energy, encouragement, and heart. While often I have seen and/or experienced disgusting forms of racism and sexism, there are luckily plenty of nerds unwilling to let jackasses shove bullshit in their face. Many, many times have I seen a gorgeous dragging (well-deserved) of some dipstick spouting off nonsense, aimed only to hurt or further disenfranchise specific people in the community. I am happy that I know so many brave and outspoken souls, who strive to make this faction of nerdiness safe and happy for everyone, especially within this tumultuous political climate. One of these awesome people just so happens to be Camomo of Camomo Cosplay, known for their Queen Kida from Atlantis: The Lost Empire. I interviewed them last year for BNP, so I felt like a follow-up was in order! I hope you enjoy.

In a battle against the Titans, what anime hero would you bring with you? I am definitely bringing Saitama from One Punch Man to the fight!!

Black Nerd Problems: It’s been a year since I last interviewed you. What’s changed your life?

Camomo Cosplay: I would say that my love for cosplaying has truly grown! I’m doing even more cosplays and have made so many new friends. It has been a crazy year but I will never give up on the community.

BNP: Have you noticed any positive or negative trends in the cosplay community?

Camomo: I have noticed a negative trend of some cosplayers complaining about issues in the community, but not doing anything to solve them. I always tell people to be the change you want to see.

But I have also seen a positive trend of cosplayers sharing more and going out of their way to make new friends and have the community be more inclusive.

BNP: Has the community gotten political, especially with what the nation is currently going through?

Camomo: I do believe that is has because at the end of the day people are still people. Even though we are all cosplayers we still have our own values and political views and I knew it was bound to cross over.

BNP: What are your goals for the future?

Camomo: My goals for the future are to cosplay even more characters throughout the year. Go to conventions I have never been at before. Grow my cosplay page on Instagram and Facebook. And I really want to branch out and make even more cosplay friends.
