This week’s Nightwing was a good overall issue, but a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to the narrative. Since Dr. Hurt kidnapped Robin in the last issue, Grayson and Shawn head off to Egypt to track down the good doctor and rescue Robin. What works well in this issue is the relationship between Grayson and Shawn, showing their connectivity, differences and methodologies for how they try on the hero suit. Regardless of what happens in this series, I hope the Defacer is a likeable and capable enough character to get more shine beyond the Nightwing series. She would be a nice addition to DC’s current run of heroes.
What is a little disjointed is the divine theme of The Great Beast and the sacrifice of the gods motif as it relates to the rest of the book. It just doesn’t seem like a proper escalation from where the story began. Disturbing? Sure. There is an increase on the perversions from the previous issues, with living dolls and whatnot.
The book, even shared between Fernandez and Jung still looks pretty good and consistent. This is an action heavy issue and the team handles it really well, with some scenes just looking spectacular.
All in all, the issue is pretty decent but not quite to the narrative stature of previous issues. It does look great however with some excellent showcase panels by the artist.
