I’m just going to go ahead and say that I’m happy Star Wars is done with that weird Doctor Aphra crossover and back to doing what it does best: making you remember why you fell in love with these time-honored characters in the first place. Jason Aaron is at his best when he’s getting to the heart of Team Skywalker, highlighting their most endearing selves in every adventure. There’s a reason this book is one of the best on the shelves.
Issue #33 is focuses squarely on Luke and Leia ending up in what is more or less Castaway In Space. Aaron successfully offers up some heartfelt, well developed insight into these (so far) unknowing siblings and what motivates them both… particularly Leia. Since we know she becomes formidable and respected in the later episodes, it’s nice to see a little more retroactive development being implemented for her. Leia’s internal narrative is quite welcome and adept at immersing you in the story. When the action breaks out, it’s a little predictable but is completely forgiven because it’s shockingly satisfying. Salvador Larroca does a great job is delivering a sense of scale and intensity.
There are a couple of panels that convey the idea that you could fly along the clear blue oceans forever and a day. And when war breaks out, the action is absolutely gorgeous. The semi photo-realistic faces can be a bit jarring at times, but Larroca’s style in this regard can be filed under “not for everyone” as opposed to “badly done.”
Bottom Line: There’s nothing this book needed more than a little brother-sister quality time. Aaron delivers heavily on the top-notch character development Leia needed in the era of this new extended universe since we’re not going to get as much as we deserve in the movies for obvious reasons. Great offering to the blerd gawds.
