East of West #33 Review

Writer: Jonathan Hickman / Artist: Nick Dragotta / Image Comics Every. Time. I. Think. This. Shit. Is. Brutal. Hickman. Be. Like. Nah. B. Good lord, East of West is a very Hickman story with a long game in mind and often slow burn, but when there’s an end to something, my gawd, these cats leave no doubt. Picking up, primarily from issue #30 that saw the return of Wolf to his tribe and assuming the role of chief, much of this issue focuses on the once brewing, but now full blown, rebellion at the White Tower. Every revelation, development, a piece of dialogue is carefully crafted depending on not only the situation but on the circumstances that have led us to this moment. There sometimes feels like the consequences of this war don’t always reflect in magnitude to the stakes, but that is definitely present in this episode.

Of course, Dragotta does the Lord’s work as this issue looks spectacular. The action sequences with the rebellion are especially poignant, as his signature kinetic style is so fitting in such a chaotic setting.

I wouldn’t have thought I would love East of West so much with Death and the Beast absent from the book for this long, but the creators have done such painstakingly great work in building such a fascinating world, that the war between the factions has been so entertaining. By the time we get to Death and the Beast, the world may look very different than how they left it. 9.3 We Comin’ For the Booz Too out of 10 Reading East of West? Find BNP’s other …
