Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #30 Review

Writer: Robert Venditti / Artist: Patrick Zircher / DC Comics Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps has been a rollercoaster thrill ride across the galaxy that has brought honor back to the franchise. Robert Venditti has been churning out sci-fi swashbuckling at its finest. But can this book maintain such epic momentum? This week, Hal takes a mission back to his home sector to investigate the possible return of an old foe we haven’t heard from in a while. It’s nice reunion between Hal and Superman and the dynamics between characters are all on point. The relationship between the Lanterns is always entertaining enough but this issue felt a little short. The conflict that revealed the real threat in this story arc was done well enough but it just felt like too much of b-line rush to get to the finish. I realize it’s not a Superman book but honestly, the issue deserved a little more character development on Superman’s part. We’re getting so much dimension from him in his own book, it seems like a bit of a crime to reduce him to such a straightforward textbook appearance.

Patrick Zircher’s artwork is a continuation of the quality run we’ve had lately thanks to Rafa Sandoval. His figures are well detailed and highly expressive but there’s also still maintaining a certain levity we haven’t seen on this book in a while. Also… dude draws a terrifying Parallax.
