Supergirl #14 Review

Writer: Steve Orlando / Artist: Jose Luis / DC Comics Supergirl #14 is a crossover with Chinese Super-Man that fills the gap between story arcs, a Supergirl Annual-esque transition that serves as part epilogue to the attack of the Furious Five, part launch point for what’s to come in Kara Danvers vs Supergirl. To that end, it does what it intends to do, but whether you enjoy it largely depends on your interest in “finding your inner peace” devices. On one hand, it solves the dilemma of Kara’s hyper-sensitive superpowers to move on cleanly to the next arc; on the other, it accomplishes the feat rather simply, to the point of feeling cheap. Regardless, as a self-contained story, Supergirl #14 checks its boxes: a problem, a friend, and in inner conflict solved through a little self-discovery. Throw in a bit of action and this is the result.

Jose Luis’ artwork offers some gorgeous wide shots and outdoor landscapes; useful, too, to compensate for the limited range of expressions from our antagonist who lives in a perpetual state of gnashing his teeth. Kara’s emotional range is depicted exceptionally well though, from determination to anger to amused self-satisfaction at finding her inner balance. Overall, as a standalone, Supergirl #14 stands solid and pays our toll across to the next arc. Kara Danvers vs Supergirl has good potential given the ending of Supergirl #13 and the changes that Kara is facing, not to mention a new foe in the form of one Cat Grant. Keep reading and you m…
