Batman Beyond #45 Review

Writer: Dan Jurgens / Artist: Paul Pelletier / DC Comics

By building on years of canon and extending out to tell its own story, Batman Beyond continues to accomplish what only the best spinoff sequels do.

Issue #45 is an ode to the Batman of modern times as it connects stories from the present and future and shows us how some of our favorite characters in the Batman mythos might turn out in 30 years.

The main plotline of this issue focuses on how Mr. Zero, a former member of the League of Assassins who adopted Ra’s al Ghul’s obsession with wiping out humanity. His current plan is to bring on a new ice age but, thankfully, the one person standing in his way is none other than Ra’s grandson and Bruce Wayne’s son, Damian Wayne.

Now the leader of the League of Assassins, Damian has taken the organization into a slightly different direction. Instead of looking to rid the world of its greatest disease—humanity—he’s depending on science to find the answer.

This inevitably leads to a coup, led by Mr. Zero, and Damian is forced to retreat to Gotham City to get the help of his father, the “pretend Batman” Terry McGinnis and everyone whose there to help them. Including Mayor Dick Grayson and his daughter, who’s recently taken up the mantle of being a bat-themed hero. With a new costume!

With the combination of backstory for exposition, fight scenes and the introduction of new threats, this is a strong issue of a series I’m growing to like more and more with every read.
