Binge the Rest of the Summer Now! A Look at What’s Coming to Netflix this August

The hottest month of the year is upon us! I am excited to let the heat waves continue with the Netflix binges keeping me chill. This August there are some pretty interesting shows coming down the line. In particular… the drumline.

Marching Orders– NETFLIX ORIGINAL August 3rd

Yes, at the top of the month Netflix will air season 1 of “Marching Orders” the real-life Drumline of the Bethune-Cookman University Marching Wildcats. So you remember Drumline, yea the film where Nick Cannon joins the drumline at southern Black university but never learned to read music and blows everyone’s minds. The film touched a lot of people’s hearts because they made like three more of them. This movie bursts the eardrums of that film wide open. The trailer gives me the pride and pain akin to being beat by a loving southern Black mother after you did some stupid sh!*t and got in trouble at school.

This documentary follows the auditions, rehearsals, and performances from all angles. You see the trials and tribulations of the coaches, the choreographers, the conductors, dancers, musicians, flag twirlers the whole 9 – oh and they go to school there. I’m already tired, hurt, and sweaty just from watching the trailer, but these band members are more than legit. Check out the best of the best in marching bands starting August 3rd.

Once in a Lifetime Sessions with TLC August 1st

Netflix is also bringing in a new series, “Once in a Lifetime Series” the first installment featuring TLC. The series will follow around several musicians as they gear up for a big concert performance and look at their road to fame. This episode we get to see the BTS of TLC as they prepare for an intimate concert performed in LA. Not only do we see the behind the scenes as they prepare, but it’s a look at the history of TLC and what got them to this point. I feel like it’s Diary and Behind the Music mixed together with the added draw of Netflix binge capability. The series begins August 1st.

The Innocents– NETFLIX ORIGINAL August 24th

Netflix Original movie “The Innocents” is a suspense thriller runaway film with the best twist. Two teenagers run away to be with each other (very YA novel twilight feel at first.) Then we see this mysterious group of adults discussing the fate of the young girl in the duo and why she needs their help. They’re in some sort of secret, bleak, science experiementy facility, looking like the place that made Jessica Jones super with very worried white faces looking at the camera.

The girl in question has run away with a handsome “highly melanated” bloke, and they are in love, but his love has a secret even she didn’t know. She can apparently shapeshift! Not able to control her powers their fairytale runaway turns into running to evade the danger that is following her while navigating this slippery ability of hers. With fast-paced action and pretty clever transformations, I am looking forward to Netflxing this one.

Finally here is our “Strong Black Lead of the Month” Simone Missick

Marvel’s Luke Cage

Yes all hands up emoji, yes! There were a few things to praise in season 2 of Luke Cage this year being, Bushmaster and my girl, Misty Knight! There were a lot of name corrections going on this season, besides “Stokes… Mariah STOKES,” the name that was ringing in my ear – Mercedes Knight…“It’s Misty, Misty Knight.” Giiirrrrl, tell em who you are! I was all in for Simone Missick this season and have a reason to live knowing she will be in Iron Fist season 2 making sure that ish comes correct this time.
