I didn’t remember until recently that there was a gap between Lex Luthor being Superman and Bendis taking over the book that I did not read. So I have no idea what happened to Lex that he’s Obi Wan Kenobi-ing everyone. That said, I love watching a character stay cool, calm and all the chill during a tense confrontation and then freak the fuck out when it’s over. Action Comics #1013 has the Queenpin of Metropolis, Miss Leone doing the cool to freak out transition. With Brian Michael Bendis putting out some heavy Leviathan stories, Action Comics gets a breather to touch the edges of the story. The issue focuses on Leone, Robinson Goode and Rose/Thorn. Two of the characters are confronted by a drone that projects a message from Lex Luthor. He’s been leaving “gifts” for some of the characters touched by Leviathan with mixed results. Perry White has Robinson Goode in his office to talk to her about her story about Thorn. It’s revealed that Thorn has been approached by Leviathan. In a current interaction between Thorn and a couple of Leviathan’s zealots, Superman gets involved to diffuse the situation.
At this point, I’m pretty convinced that the Daily Planet is a hostile work environment. I get that Goode is a super villain, but Perry doesn’t know that. He gives her an enormous amount of shit for not being “Lois Lane”-enough. This is a solid Super-Bendis book that I’ve become accustomed to. Kuoranski continues to prove himself a capable artist. There’s an action shot with Thorn and Leviathan that just drew me in. My favorite part of the book was the scene with Superman. It is probably because he’s so OP that scenes with Superman not fighting are the most interesting. Leviathan tells Superman that he won’t fight him and Supe says, “thank you”. The dialogue between him, the Leviathan soldier and Thorn was fantastic. Honestly, if the comic was ten pages of this I’d be set.
