Batman #62 offers a glimpse into what it’s like to be in the mind of Bruce Wayne — and it’s even more disturbing than you’d think.
I always wondered what it would be like to have the mind of the world’s greatest detective. Having the ability to walk into a room and assimilate every piece of information within a few seconds seems like a pretty cool skill to have. But, as we’ve seen in countless tales, the mind of a genius is rarely a peaceful place.
Batman #62 takes us into the mind of Bruce Wayne as he tries to escape being held hostage in a meat locker as Pyg plans to take him out.
Readers and watchers of Batman have seen him put Houdini to shame as he escaped from the most dire of traps on several occasions. Typically, he gets the villain talking too much and takes advantage of their lapses in preparation, judgement, or reaction. In this issue, we see things from Batman’s perspective. What goes through his mind when he’s cutting his way through ropes? How does he keep fighting after he takes on so much physical damage?
If you ever thought you might have been Batman if a couple of things went differently, read this issue and reassess.
The art in this issue is disorienting, but mostly in a good way, and would probably be fantastic while under some sort of influence or other. (I’m honestly kind of curious to try reading it with some 3D glasses).
Lastly, it’s good to see that this issue was still tangentially connected to the events of Batman #60. If we had to sit through 4-5 issues that didn’t build on that story in the least, it’d be more than a little frustrating. But it looks like the story is still moving forward, albeit at a slower pace to build up anticipation.
