Writer: Chris Samnee, Mark Waid / Artist: Chris Samnee / Marvel Comics Samnee and Waid continue to give us the Black Widow we need and deserve in the Marvel Universe. We join Natasha at a S.H.I.E.L.D. facility in the Antarctic. This facility has a skeleton crew that each possess a key. This facility is the kill switch for S.H.I.E.L.D. across the globe, meaning that once the order is given this is how all of the data gets deleted. That also means leaving mad agents in the field in the dark. This is the burn notice of all burn notices.
The new Red Room recruits flood the block to initiate the burn notice but Natasha is there to blitz that whole notion. The best thing about Natasha is how she flourishes in any environment, and here we see her in extremely close quarters not only having to fight off 6 skilled assassins but also retrieve those 6 keys they stole on some capture-the-flag shit. Samnee is able to show off Natasha’s agility in every page. No panel is wasted in showing how quick and ahead of the curve Natasha is in how she creates space and plans an attack. Waid and Samnee also show how Natasha’s weakness can be her compassion and her confidence in experience. We don’t usually see someone of Natasha’s caliber get the ill And-1 crossover, so you know things are bad once that occurs.
