BNP At Home Recommends: ‘Black Panther: The Deadliest of the Species’ (2009)

While there are other “must read” Black Panther stories like ‘See Wakanda and Die’ or ‘Enemy of the State’, this run by Reginald Hudlin is a great take on the world of Wakanda. Not only does it set the spotlight on Black Panther and the greatness of T’Challa, but it properly ushers in Storm as the Queen of Wakanda. It also gives us Shuri donning the Black Panther mantle for the first time after overcoming her hubris. On the flip side of things, we see T’Challa take one of the hardest Ls ever. This gives Ororo the chance to solidify the undeniable love between her and her King — she literally goes through hell for her husband. Most comic book fans know this is all leading up to one of the greatest limited comic series of this millennium…but that’s another tale for another time.
