Generations: The Thunder #1 Review

Writer: Jason Aaron / Artist: Mahmud Asrar / Marvel Comics I’ll be honest with you. There are so many major comic events happening these days, it’s inevitable that some of them are going to escape sight. I literally didn’t know anything about Generations until my editor told me I was writing a review about the Thor one-shot for it. That might be a testament to just how disposable these events are at times. With all that in mind, to my pleasant surprise, this book was pretty lit. Essentially, there’s space and time shenanigans that bring the Mighty Thor and the Unworthy Thor (Odinson) back into each other’s circles to do battle with an old foe. Jason Aaron gives us a familiar, fun version of the Odinson from back during his Thor: God of Thunder series. If the objective is to give readers a taste of the Odinson Thor of old that we love (though not as much as Jane Foster), then this book accomplishes the task well enough. There’s even the small bit of character development for both Thors to justify their needing to come into each other’s circles.

Mahmud Asrar’s artwork is some of the best in the game and he is certainly delivering his A-game in this book. His rendition of Apocalypse looks absolutely terrifying as he should. The battle between vikings and Egyptians feels massive, while not so much that your eye gets lost trying to determine the purpose of what you’re reading. Bottom Line: It’s not something I would call life changing, but that’s not really the point of this book…
