Writer: Robert Venditti / Artist: Jordi Tarragona, Rafa Sandoval / DC Comics Robert Venditti has really created something special with Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps. The action and the scale is always appropriately enormous while still managing to be personal and genuine with these characters in ways that challenge what they know. The stakes are always high as a Lantern, but they haven’t been this high in quite a while.
Issue #27 follows right after last issue’s event with Hal and Kyle protecting Orion from a new threat. This installment is the textbook definition of “shoot first, ask questions later” with the Lanterns doing a lot of ring slinging in a crisis situation and then the second half of the book stopping to evaluate what just happened. The action is pretty epic but I’ll admit that my favorite part is Kyle Rayner helping play field medic and Orion actually (spoiler here) like a badass. Nobody could have captured the stakes and scale of Venditti’s script like Rafa Sandoval. By leaps and bounds, Sandoval is the best artist this book could ask for. Every panel feels like you’re right in the thick of the action and that a building could fall on my head at any moment. The most gorgeous moment is easily Hal taking a energy blast full on in the face. The sheer detail and sense of urgency is amazing. Bottom Line: Venditti is on point, as usual.
