Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #6 Review

So, Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps has been a mostly fantastic book that completely redeems Robert Venditti for the sin of not being Geoff Johns. However, last month’s issue ended up being sort of filler-ish and disjointed, slowing the action down to sort of crawl through explanations of things we’ve been shown for the entire book so far. Fortunately, things turn around pretty quickly this week.

Issue #6 is really the book that Issue #5 should have been. John Stewart and the newly returned Corps finally mount up. Hal Jordan unleashes an all out assault in traditional Hal Jordan form and Sinestro gets pissed about it. Even though the story beats are pretty basic, Venditti manages to make the whole thing sing with an intensity that works you up for the big final battle. Granted, it would be awesome if he’d gotten to this an issue or two ago, but #6 does such a good job of getting back to the fun, this can be overlooked. This issue saw Rafa Sandoval thankfully tag Ethan Van Sciver back out and retake the helm for artwork. Sandoval is in rare form this issue, giving us the huge, epic scenes we love with these ridiculously detailed Lantern constructs that are nothing less than awe inspiring. Bottom Line: Last issue was more than a little rough, but getting back to the aspects of the story we enjoyed and Rafa Sandoval being back on the job put this book back on track as one of DC’s strongest. 8.5 Evil Widow’s Pea…
