Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #44 Review

Writer: Robert Venditti / Artist: Brandon Peterson / DC Comics The Darkstar’s saga has taken a slight detour in this week’s installment of Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps. Issue #44 picks up with Hal and the rest of the Honor Guard crew, outnumbered by the Darkstar army, reaching out to seek help in unconventional places. For an issue that didn’t see a whole lot of action, there was a lot going on here. We got a look at Tomar-Tu’s state of mind and resolve, a great exchange about ideologies between Hal and an old friend and yet another wonderful tactical moment with BNP favorite, John Stewart. Somehow, Venditti always finds a way to make Guy Gardner drinking beer an abundantly entertaining highlight of the series. This issue is no different. If anyone else had written this, it would probably feel like meandering filler, but it advances the plot a bit while still taking a breath from intense staredowns and standoffs. It’s hard to get a better art than what Rafa Sandoval usually delivers on this book, but Brandon Peterson certainly comes close. There’s a fantastic flashback page that displays such incredible line work and a fun color palette. My favorite page is easily when the Flash appears and Hal is in awe with lightning everywhere. It was just gorgeous and shows Peterson’s strength in contrasting humans against metahumans. Bottom Line: Venditti is great at writing a book that’s high on energy even when it’s low on action. A pretty good addition to the Darkstar saga.
