Writer: Brandon Montclare / Artist: Natacha Bustos / Marvel Comics Random rides through space and time, some of the coolest team-ups Marvel has to offer, and a 30-foot dinosaur? You have every reason to love Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. This is unquestionably one of the most endearing comics I’ve read in the past ten years, hands down. Issue #20 finds Lunella launching off into space to answer a distress signal, but the sender is not who she thought and neither is the distress they’re in. This book consistently excels at maintaining conflicts that challenge Moon Girl as a hero and as a child with sometimes questionable social skills. I found myself literally laughing out loud at some point when I realized the full potential of the premise being presented. This book is forever charming and yet still infinitely adventurous.
Natacha Bustos has always been perfect to draw this book, but this issue really demonstrates why. It was really cool to see such high sci-fi concepts brought to life in a way that still views this world though a child-like lens. Bustos brings so much character and charisma to every element of each panel. I’m pretty sure the head of Doombot is one of my new favorite characters of all time. How can something that’s supposed to be so sinister have me laughing at every page? I know how: because this is how good comics are made. Bottom Line: We as a culture are just not discussing this book as much as it deserves. Black Girl Magic and entry-level Afrofuturism …
