Sea of Stars #4 Review

Writer: Jason Aaron and Dennis Hallum / Artist: Stephen Green / Image Comics There is a lot to unpack in Sea of Stars‘ fourth issue. By now, Aaron and Hallum have mastered the art of telling a story from two different perspectives, which is part of what makes the book so good. Much of Gil and Kadyn’s journeys differ from one another yet both, in their own way, have various similarities. That’s something we see a lot of in this issue. Both Gil and Kadyn have moments where their journeys match one another: from their oddball companions to the emotional weight of their situation. As always, Gil’s experience is truly harrowing, only this time its people trying to kill him instead of the environment. Ever since he landed on that planet it’s been one thing after another. What I love about his character is how resourceful he is, especially against people trying to hunt him. It’s a great parallel to Kadyn being able to survive anything without any worry. Most of Gil’s determination comes from his drive to get back to his son, pushing himself to no end. It will be interesting to see how that plays out in future issues. What’s interesting is that Kadyn’s journey isn’t as positive either. More and more, he’s starting to realize the situation he’s in and coming to terms with the fact that his father is gone. This is actually the most that we see him distressed. While we have seen him troubled before, in previous issues he has brushed it off and buried his feeling by basking in his newfound godliness. Like I’ve mentioned before, he deals with everything put in front of him much like a child. It’s great writing from Aaron and Hallum that the character feels so genuine. One thing that sets this issue apart from the others is the addition of the Zzazteks. The world of Sea of Stars has been mostly been a wild space of creatures and emptiness. This is the first time we are introduced to an actual society of people, opening up the world in new ways. Both Gil and Kadyn have different experiences with the Zzazteks, but it gives the reader some clues into what this group is all about. The introduction of this group also gives us a few revelations about Kadyn’s situation that are sure to give us some eyeopening issues ahead.
