Suicide Squad #4 is here, and a few issues into this series I can confidently say that this book has absolutely no right being this good. No right at all. But I guess it makes sense when you realize that the man behind the writing– Tom Taylor– is the same man who brought relevance to the Injustice 2 tie-in comic universe. Which is yet another book that had the audacity to be phenomenal.
Issue #4 of the sqwad continues to deepen the conflict that our team has with their new leader Lok, who replaced Amanda Waller, and their new teammates The Revolutionaries.
Deadshot and Harley Quinn are the incumbent members, who have to basically join The Revolutionaries or die by their hand, as they’ve revealed that they purposely got captured by Lok in an attempt to take down the Suicide Squad from the inside. They’re all about bucking the system with any means necessary, hence their name. And their leader is named Osita, and she’s Puerto Rican and looks just like Rosario Dawson. It’s great.
I love the levity of this series. It’s dealing with some heavy stuff, but it doesn’t take itself too seriously. I’m often laughing out loud while I’m reading it which doesn’t happen much when I’m reading comics. It’s just that good.
Shout out to artists Sampere and Albarran as well. They are bringing a style to this book that feels very cinematic. From the way each issue begins with the credits and the title card, I feel like I’m watching an infinitely better version of the horrid 2016 movie that I am continuously trying to scrub from my brain. The panel layouts and the action have a feel to it that really brings out that movie theater popcorn tension to the page. If you aren’t reading this book, rectify that immediately.
Suicide Squad #4 dives deep into just who the Revolutionaries are and why they’re in the Suicide Squad. Oh, and some Captain Boomerang too. Can’t get enough of that guy.
