I’m totally late on this trailer, huh?!?! Oh my gee, I cannot BELIEVE that it’s time for ANOTHER season of the hit swimming dramedy Free! This adorable series captured people’s spirits back in 2013 when it made its debut and it continues to pull in audiences who want to experience the thrill of competitive water sports alongside Haru and team.
S3 will see our fave swim team transition into college life. Like many other young grown-ups, we will see them grapple with the challenges of adulthood while adjusting new environments. This shit can be terrifying, and it will be interesting to see how these very different friends will tackle new problems and reach new goals. If we know our favorite sports stars, we know they will overcome all their obstacles swimmingly. It looks like we’re going to be introduced to a new character, another friend from the past, Ikuya Kirishima (how many former buds will be making an appearance in this show????)
Free! is a TV series produced by Kytoto Animation and Animation Do, and it is technically a sequel to the novel High Speed! by Kōji Ōji. The plot follows high school students Haruka Nanase, Makoto Tachibana, Nagisa Hazuki, and Rei Ryugazaki as they revive their school’s swim club and return to competitive racing. They face their old friend turned rival, Rin Matsuoka and together find the true meaning of friendship.
I am so excited for these new episodes because I am SUCH sports anime trash now, thanks in part to Yuri on Ice!, Free! encompasses the themes of overcoming adversity and relying on your true pals, with a little bit of slice-of-life feels for you to take comfort in. There is a slight thrill when watching the competition episodes, but never any super heart-racing scenes so for the most part, this should be an easy binge. So take your mark, get set, and WAIT for July 11th!
