Ciri Back to Deal With These Monsters in ‘The Witcher 4’ Trailer

Let me be clear about something off the top, The Witcher 3 is one of my top 3 games of all time and if you catch me on the right day, it may not be 2 or 3. And the review I wrote was BEFORE Heart of Stone and Blood & Wine dropped which are easily the best versions of that game.

I ain’t no Witcher drive by, ok. Netflix adaptations mostly hurt my feelings, aiight. I’ve read all the books, (most) of the comics and played all the games. Multiple, multiple times. The Witcher franchise is probably my favorite fantasy text and I don’t make a lot of apologies about that. So why is this all relevant?

Cuz we didn’t know what the next story was gonna be. The books finished (in canon) before the first Witcher game, so while CD Projekt Red had guidance and obviously know the source in and out, they are not retelling the books, everything is a sequel. So in CDPR we trust for a completely new story that may or may not significantly include its main protagonist, Geralt of Rivia. And let us not be cute here, Geralt is the GOAT. In almost every iteration. The books, the games, Henry Cavill and especially since Netflix canceled the Witcher before someone could could take over the role…right?! (I know, I know y’all, just let me live in ignorance) So it does sting or leave a bit of a pit in your stomach that he ain’t the main dude in the next game. But I’m a be real, seeing Ciri do what she doing in this trailer and…I think I’m good. WE GOOD. We bout to eat y’all. I don’t want to skip misogyny cuz misogyny don’t ever skip us, ya know. Misogyny always hits leg day. But I am going to skip over the folks pissed off that we playing as a woman and that she doesn’t look like the doll faced size 1 fantasy so many fanboys need to make it through a whole game with a woman protagonist. We don’t need to feed the “why did they make Aloy ugly in Forbidden West” trolls again, they still full from that shit.

But I do feel like there are folks who only came for Witcher 3 or only know Ciri from Netflix (and all respect to actress Freya Allan…you just working with they give you fam, but what they give you ain’t a whole lot). And if that’s your only exposure to Ciri, you might not be super excited about Ciri as your protagonist. So let me reassure you, book Ciri? Trained at Kaer Morhen, Ciri? Joined a Robin Hood-esque murderous band called the Rats, Ciri? Was once a slave and forced to fight in the arenas, Ciri? Fought her way through a dessert populated with monsters, Ciri? Killed a dude that had killed multiple witchers, Ciri? That woman is a KILLA without the hard -er, ok? We gon be aiight. A different personality than Geralt but obviously learning the lessons from our dude, I honestly feel good about this. We should all, feel good about this.

Not to mention, she is full on Witcher now (which maybe makes the non-empress ending canon from Witcher 3???). Any one can carry two swords on their back (silver for monsters, steel for humans), but if you drinking potions and your eyes go all vertical, yeah you done went through the Trial of Grasses, yo. Which I believe would make her the first woman to survive that? We have so much new ground to cover for this shit, y’all don’t even know!

So what’s true?! Did Ciri actually become a Witcher immediately or did something happen with Nilfgaard that forced her to flee? Did she start her own Witcher school (School of the Lynx apparently) and if so, just how far in the future can this be? If she did in fact become a Witcher, this could be MANY years in the future as she would age a lot slower now. So many questions, yo. So many.

As for the trailer, I don’t know what else to say except lets fucking go. I do like (and I’m some sure will hate) that with Ciri, we get a little something different with her defending a woman. As this trailer does reference the Witcher 3 “Killing Monsters” trailer, I think it speaks volumes that where Geralt defended a woman that was being attacked, Ciri takes on this monster preemptively before (she thinks) harm comes to the woman.

I’m looking forward to that kind of difference in character development if that’s something they lean into. And the the ending, fucking chef’s kiss. Again, when Geralt was handing out justice in the previous trailer, he said he was killing monsters and now Ciri is saying, “there are no gods here, only monsters” when facing a group of men that just sacrificed a woman. It. Is. Fucking. On.

Sadly, I know we not getting this game for AT LEAST a year from now, my prediction being the early 2026. But your boy is here with baited breath. Clutching my medallion tight as hell. See y’all eventually on the Path.

Whole lotta people tattled on themselves and their ending by being “shocked” that Ciri was the new protag. Frankly I’m thrilled!
