Lanterns: The Weenie'(s)– Oh, Everybody Talking Spicy

*Spoilers ahead* Lanterns’ “The Weenie” episode feels like we’re watching a version of The Town on an intergalactic scale. Everyone has an angle. Hal Jordan doesn’t want to give up the ring; John Stewart believes he was born and trained for the role of Green Lantern; the Guardians of the Universe want Hal gone; the town of Rushville wants Hal and John gone; and we are all waiting for the other shoe to drop. I find it hilarious that John is getting a call from his parents and has to go to a payphone to check in with the guardian, Lianna. When that check-in doesn’t happen, we see Lianna appear later in front of John, when he’s alone in his room. What’s crazy to me is that the Guardians are all-powerful beings, and they need to communicate via a payphone? The hell he supposed to find a payphone at? Were those even around in 2016 anymore? The hell the Guardians using old ass technology for? Why not throw in a fax machine while they’re at it? Now, when it comes to comic adaptations on TV, you never know what is going to be taken from the source and remain unchanged. Lanterns changed many things about the Green Lantern lore for HBO, but the Guardians of the Universe talking crazy to people? That has been a constant since 1959 (except for Ganthet). Immediately, John’s not following protocol irritates Lianna. She waves what John wants in front of him, telling him that the Guardians plan to impeach the fuck outta Hal Jordan.
