19 Years and 10 Films later. From Halle Berry’s aborted Kenyan accent to Ivan Ooze Apocalypse, the X-Men have come a long way to end up back where they began. Divergent timelines be damned, the Children of the Atom take another chance to bring arguably their greatest story to big screens.
After months of rumors, reshoots, and a delayed release date, Fox reveals the first official trailer for Dark Phoenix. The film marks the final project under the supervision of Fox’s production before Disney absorbs the X-Men intellectual property into its Marvel holdings. Whether you love or hate the direction that Fox has taken with the X-Men franchise since 2000, everyone can agree that the characters will not be done justice until they join the house that Feige built with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Perhaps as a parting gift, longtime X-Men screenwriter and producer Simon Kinberg takes the reigns as director, promising to do justice to the classic Chris Claremont Dark Phoenix storyline.
Interestingly, in a move to possibly place the film as an end cap for the two trilogies – OG X-Men (2000 – 2006) and First Class Continuity (2011 – 2016) – Dark Phoenix is the first not to feature the X-Men name in the title. Make no mistake, this is the end.
The official synopsis for the film reads:
Dark Phoenix hits theaters worldwide on June 7, 2019. Directed by Simon Kinberg. The cast features James McAvoy (Professor X) , Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique) , Sophie Turner (Jean Grey), Nicholas Hoult (Beast) , Evan Peters (Quicksilver), Tye Sheridan (Cyclops), Alexandra Shipp (Storm), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler) and Jessica Chastain playing a new character referred to as “Smith.”
