As we check off the weeks before GAME OF THRONES Season 5 premieres on April 12th, we’re having a hard time holding down our excitement. To keep that intensity going, I will be counting down my favorite scenes that the series has produced so far. Keep in mind these are “my favorite” scenes. Please share your favorites in the comments.
From Season One, Episode Six: A Golden Crown
One of the hundreds of memorable quotes from The Wire, is when Marlo steals from a convenient store in front of a security guard just because he can. When the guard approaches him, knowing full well that he’s in an impossible situation, Marlo delivers the iconic: “You want it to be one way. But it’s the other way.”
This is the lesson that Game of Thrones teaches over and over and over again. People call themselves Lord and Kings and High Born and all of that, thinking that people are to behave at some invisible standard befitting their disposition. But often in Thrones the lesson is: can you kill me? No? Well get the hell on then. Nothing personifies this more than the duel between Bronn and Ser Vardis Egan. Here’s the scenario: Catelyn Stark accuses Tyrion of attempting to kill her son Bran. She takes him captive and seeks refuge with her sister Lysa, Lady of the Erie of House Arryn. Tyrion is put on trial and asks for trial by combat. Eventually, Bronn steps up as his champion while Lysa chooses one of the knights that was loyal to her departed husband, Jon Arryn.

Ser Vardis was probably a pretty good knight. The problem is, he fought by the “rules” or at least the “rules he was taught.” Bronn? Naw, b. Bronn learned how to fight, not out of some pretentious nobility, but out of survival and winning. This is capped off by Bronn kicking Ser Vardis’ already dead body through the Moon Door (for which he might still be falling, by the way). Lysa angrily states, “You don’t fight with honor!” To which Bronn replies, “No,” motioning to the gravity plagued body of her knight, “he did.” Game, blouses. Or chest armor. Whatever.
