Nextflix This Month: This December There’s More in Store than Just Holiday Cheer

It’s the holiday season, time to break out the holiday cheer, drink coquito, snuggle in with family, and Netflix! It’s the age of holiday specials but Netflix has bigger plans, let’s see what’s coming this month.

HOLIDAY SHENANIGANS

Nailed It!

Netflix isn’t really rolling out the holiday specials at the rate you would think for December, maybe they’re saving it for the new year. But on December 7th, we are getting a special holiday Nailed it! This time host Nicole Byer (loosely Exactly Nicole) gets to challenge cooking contestants with ho ho holiday mess. Nailed it is the fun cooking show where regular bakers, well terrible bakers attempt to create professional bakes. This special will feature all the candy cane, Santa cake disasters for your amusement.

FAMILY ADVENTURE

Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle

It’s here the story of Mowgli Directed by Andy Serkis. We all thought for a minute, wait the John Favreau Jungle Book redo was great… do we need another one? And then we were like Andy Serkis ok yea, more is better. Torn between two worlds, that of the jungle and that of humankind, Mowgli must navigate the inherent dangers in each on a journey to discover who he really is. If you haven’t seen it yet, go check out the trailer – you’ll get so much more hype! This will be the movie to curl up with the fam this season. With a star studded cast of course, Naomie Harris, Cate Blanchett, Benedict Cumberbatch, Freida Pinto, Christian Bale and newcomer Rohan Chand as “Mowgli”. Not only does it look like a epic special effects film (we expect no less from Serkis) it will also be dubbed in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Bengali!

DOCUMENTARY ORIGINALS

Who Killed Jam Master Jay

Netflix is bringing a remastered documentary December 7th. A film exposing the complex case around the murder of iconic DJ Jam Master Jay of the legendary Run DMC crew. I don’t know about you, but when I was a kid and heard this tragedy, it didn’t make any sense to me. This documentary runs down the confusing details of the crime, revealing the very mysterious case of Jam Master Jay’s death.

REBOOTS TO SHIP

Voltron Season 8

The unexpectedly phenomenal series is back with it’s final season on Netflix. The end of this Voltron adventure is sure to pack a giant robot punch. Sorry had to get a little punny… This band of teenagers continue to fight the forces of evil amid an epic intergalactic battle to protect the universe for the last time on December 14th.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: A Midwinter’s Tale

The epic retelling of Sabrina the Teenage Witch has been a hit! Now they are cursing us (in a good way) with an additional holiday special. As the winter solstice approaches, Sabrina orchestrates an emotional séance with serious consequences, and Susie’s merry plans turn menacing. I can hardly wait eeek! Stream it December 14th.

COMEDY SPECIAL

Ellen Degeneres: Relatable

Ellen is coming back to the stand up stage after 15 years on the talk show couch. Coming from the stage at Seattle’s Benaroya Hall, December 18th Ellen Degeneres’s “Relatable” will grace our streaming homes. Amply titled, I always felt Ellen was the one who had the IT factor but you didn’t know why. I can’t wait to see how Degeneres’s stand up… stands up to today’s Netflix comedy special scene. *wink*

NETFLIX ORIGINAL FILM THRILLER

Bird Box

On December 21st Netflix brings us a good ‘ol family flick to enjoy with the kids called “Bird Box”… Definitely not. Right before the Christmas holiday Netflix original movie, “Bird Box” may be the happening we all thought The Happening was going to be. An unseen presence brings upon the apocalypse causing mass suicides all around the world. This film takes place five years after the event as star Sandra Bullock tries to survive with her two small children against the presence. A star packed film that looks like it will be the thriller you want to see over your holiday break. Starring, Sandra Bullock (Gravity), Sarah Paulsen (American Horror Story), BD Wong (Jurassic Park), John Malcovich (Being John Malcovich) and Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight)

STRONG BLACK LEAD

Trevante Rhodes

Big ups to Trevante Rhodes and his role in Bird Box. From the time I first saw him in Moonlight I’ve been wanting to see more of what this actor can do. The trailer for Bird Box looks riveting, and hats off to Trevante having a main role in the Netflix flick. I am definitely looking forward to this December.

MARVEL CORNER

Marvel Avengers Infinity War

Yup, it’s coming to Netflix. If you have been counting your coins and holding off to purchase this gem (pun intended) good on you. On December 25th a Christmas miracle is born. Yea – I do mean Infinity War, the best present of all. Add a friend to your Netflix, lend your password, or sit around the tree and just press play – It’s a gift that keeps on giving. Watch before it Thanos snaps away…
