Hey, So, We Gotta Talk. I am, unapologetically and loudly, what certain contingents of the internet would call “woke”. I believe in radical notions like: Black lives matter, children deserve to eat every day and be safe in their homes and schools, and that women are people. I also believe that gaming isn’t currently, and has never, gone on some crusade to shoehorn in representation or “DEI”. We’ve always been here. (South of Midnight, 2025, Image via Microsoft) There’s been a lot of controversy in the gaming space lately. Some of it, like the blowback Sony is receiving for its move to end disc production, is incredibly valid. However, most of it is not Sony’s move to end disc production. God of War: Laufey is being lambasted for not starring Kratos, and for the main character not being “hot” enough is a prime example, and the memes are truly atrocious. “She fought beautifully.” (Image via Sony) This is a recurring complaint since roughly 2016, when gaming discourse began to take a nosedive during the “#MeToo” movement and “GamerGate”. The idea is that if a character isn’t aesthetically pleasing, or enough of a power fantasy, then they lose their value and are “woke trash” or “slop”. What’s This Got to Do with Anything? I say all of that to say this: before it even came out, Marvel’s Wolverine was fighting an uphill battle.
