Tower of God Review (ready to proof)

Need another fighting anime in your life? There’s this new one out and it just might be your kind of vibe.

Tower of God is based off a fantasy Korean manhwa (Korean comics and print cartoons) created by S.I.U., focuses on a young boy named “Twenty-Fifth Bam.” Unable to live without his best friend Rachel, he decides to enter the enigmatic and magical Tower to be with her. He encounters a vast variety of environments, creatures, battles, and tests. Slowly making his way, he finds answers he never thought possible about the truth of the magnificent obelisk.

So, I have to be upfront: This really isn’t my typical anime. True, I enjoy a good fighting anime here and there (Yu Yu Hakusho! Especially that Dark Tournament Saga, THE BEST), but I lean more to the pleasant, dreamy, soothing slice of life stuff. I was pumped to be given the opportunity to check out some (episodes 1-6) of this new anime, especially since the material is coming from manhwa, which is new territory for me.

I personally dug the animation in this. The red petals in the first episode and the yellow grain in the second stuck out and enhanced the environment for me. I didn’t notice glitches, and it was fast and smooth enough for me.

The plot is another story. I at first, got major Blame! vibes, only because of the “climbing through a fortress” narrative. However, I find it a bit clunky and slow in terms of advancing the story. I could not really dig Bam, who is the lead character. I found him bland and his motives the same old thing. It didn’t help that the first few minutes we get of him was grabbing Rachel and demanding she not leave him, which raised my hackles a bit. I don’t like when boys demand shit from girls, tying their “will to live” with them???? That’s kind of messed up.

Rachel was the same for me! Her reasons for not wanting Bam to find her were almost copy and pasted from 10 other anime shows and I did not find her particularly interesting.

This wasn’t an AWFUL show, but it is definitely not my thing. If you like some mystery and fighting in a fantasy world, it might just be your thing. Don’t count it out.
