After putting up with her fiancé’s bullying long enough, Scarlet El Vandimion has equal rights… and lefts to share with everyone in a royal rumble they’ll never forget…

An engagement broken off at a ball. It was supposed to be a cliche scene condemning a villainess…The fair duchess Scarlet clenches her fist and dances! A popular series that has sold over 1.4 million copies is now becoming a TV anime! This gratifying fantasy starring a fighting distinguished lady is about to begin!

May I Ask for One Final Thing? snuck up on me–y’all know that I love the villainess/ reincarnated/transmigrated female character anime genre and this one, adapted from a light novel reveals a fun twist: THE VILLIANESS GOT HANDS. Scarlet got hands, rated E for Everyone and while my initial hope was that the source material was not thin in regards to plot, I knew to look forward to watching her give everyone fades.

Episode One:

The vibes are good, the stars aligned for this one, and May I Ask for One Final Thing? first episode’s outing was everything I needed it to be. Exposition that didn’t drag on, a small introduction of the first wave of the supporting cast that didn’t feel overwhelming, and a well-paced episode that punched up the action at the appropriate times.

Learning that Scarlet, noblewoman, top student at the Academy, and fiancée’ to a very silly Prince is in fact a young woman with a heart dedicated to justice is thrilling. Flashbacks reveal a multi-faceted noble woman of many talents, who is adored by many but also resigned to duty and obligation to Prince Kyle whom she has endured for years of torment and annoyance on his end.

Viewers don’t just get a bloodbath in the ballroom, we receive a well written first episode regaling us with a tale of a woman loosed, vindicated with fury in her fists. May I Ask for One Final Thing? brings forth an utterly charming, hilarious first outing that held my attention all the way through. Not only are there well-paced spots of action and humor but also some quiet moments of introspection that help flesh out not just Scarlet but a few other major players that will most likely become more important as time goes on.

Episode Two:

Sometimes, a new anime series airs, and it is very clear that it would have had a great debut or launch if a two episode premiere was had. This is crucial for new debuts and returns of faves. I am always happy with news of when this happens as this does wonders for hyping up series and retaining or introducing fan interest in the ever-growing slots of anime to choose from each season. Here’s the thing, episode one of May I Ask for One Final Thing? charmed me so much, I did NOT need an additional episode. BUT I was happy to watch it, and I was not disappointed!

Episode two opens and continues with some great and really fun twists in the plot that not only did I not see coming but opened up to fleshing out Scarlet’s abilities and general world-building. Even at this point if you are slow to become emotionally invested in her character, you have to admit she’s quickly becoming a very interesting woman who isn’t afraid of hierarchy or leaving wicked people untouched.

Her casual attitude towards kindness and punishment strike up touching moments side by side with the really funny ones that help keep the episode’s pacing, so it doesn’t drag and gets those laughs out of the viewer. Is she revolutionizing womanhood or femininity? No. Is she making her work in society while cleaning up corruption and saving the exploited? Yes. It is easy to see that Scarlet will work to mobilize the people who will become her allies and subordinates–and where their motivations lie–in the upcoming fight for the good of the kingdom.

May I Ask for One Final Thing? does not drop the comedic quips and the dynamic between certain characters like a certain royal, built up from the first episode. In fact, it manages to build upon it. Action wise, while there is no actual blood bath from episode one–NOT A SPOILER–You’ve all seen the trailer by now if you’re reading this review. The spots of action of Scarlet battling don’t look stiff or unsatisfying even in their goofy and exaggerated sequences. If you’re looking for Jujutsu Kaisen level power scaling, you won’t find that here. (Friends, let’s be honest…the domain expansions are hell confusing–a lot of us still can’t explain the strength levels from JJK. It’s okay. This is a safe place.) I think most viewers will be entertained with this female character’s power and the, thankfully, simplified lore behind it.

Verdict

“So I watched the trailer and knew that I wanted to watch based on the adrenaline and hype of seeing a woman, wronged, punch her way to justice. Knowing that there is political intrigue within the royal court and outside of it and a finely developing story attached to this series–substance along with the sauce has me wanting more.” May I Ask for One Final Thing? is for the folks who want to live vicariously through this woman getting her lick back. Stay for a thrilling and hilarious tale of seeing someone clean up corruption and take on baddies in power all while in style and loads of humor along the way.

Perhaps you’ve had enough of the villainess genre via anime, and think that this new series can add nothing ground-breaking or new? I’d still recommend that you at least give May I Ask for One Final Thing? a watch, if not for the first two episodes. Look, I gotta be honest, I’ve been carrying a “touching grass is not enough, i want bad things to happen to people (in power)” energy for a loooooooooooooooooooong time. This is a “regal action fantasy series” with some scandalous plot twists to come fruition in upcoming episodes that I really want folks to be around and watch and be entertained by.
