REVIEW: ‘One Day in June’ [Not Ready] Push 05/15

I have been a huge fan of Charlot Kristensen, Danish/Zimbabwean illustrator & book author based in Ireland, since I reviewed her debut graphic novel, What We Don’t Talk About back in 2020. Her work emphasizes on diverse representation with a focus on empowering Black people and carries some of the most colorful and impactful pages of art that I have seen in such a long time in kid lit.  When I heard she was taking the illustrator reins on a children’s book on the life and activism of our beloved Marsha P Johnson–written by Torumaline, I knew that I was game to read and review. My heart was full looking at the cover of the book, so vividly bright and warm and cheerful–all ways that Marsha has been described and remembered by those who loved her, and those who celebrate and champion her life’s story. The cover remains a perfect gateway to this creative team’s vision to bring the spirit of Marsha P Johnson’s life to the world of younger readers.
