As we so eloquently stated in the review for #1, Dark Night Metal looks to be taking on quite a lot. So much so that it could be the perfect wrap-up to years of storytelling if they stick the landing. Or… further jumble up DC continuity if their eyes were actually bigger than their stomachs. But, as issue #2 starts to prove, if anyone can pull it off it’s Snyder and Capullo.
Issue #2 picks up with the entire Justice League and all of its affiliates in the middle of a worldwide search for Batman, who’s doing an awfully good job of Batman-ing. Not only do they struggle to find him, but they’re getting their a##es handed to them while they do it.
It’s not until halfway through the issue that we start to see just how in over his head Batman truly is. Which I’d argue is a continuation of a growing trend of showing Batman’s flaws as he’s gotten far too over-powered in mot continuities.
As far as he knows, his entire life is a lie. Honestly? The entire history of the Wayne family is a lie as strings have been pulled going back to the beginning of time as we know it. Suddenly, plot points going back as far as the early days of Snyder/Capullo start making even more sense than they already did. And these two were masters of tying up loose ends! Usually, when creative teams try to retcon a story and connect previously unrelated events, it comes off as forced. But Snyder, and even Tom King, have established a universe where all of this feels somewhat natural. Still massive, but naturally so. Like a volcano erupting or something along those lines.
By the end of the issue one thing is made clear. We’re going to be talking about this for a while. All I hope is that it’s not in the way we talk about Rebirth because we basically have to just to understand how we even got here. But in the way that we talk about “Court of Owls” because we want to.
The team’s back together and playing well like they never left. Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo have a strong case for being the most potent duo to ever work on a Batman run. Their jerseys are right up there in the rafters surrounded by all the championship banners they’ve earned.
Still not gonna give it a 9+ score until we get a better idea of where the story’s headed, though.
