Black History Month Anime Character (Kaname Tosen : Bleach)

 

Kaname Tōsen “A child is born with no state of mind blind to the ways of mankind.”

When it comes to underrated mascots full of melanin, there’s an abundance to choose from. Whether a character is underused, unseen for most of the show, or just doesn’t get their time to shine, there’s always a few that just don’t get the spotlight they deserve. Bleach was a show and a manga that was amazing for most of its runtime with a large cast of characters and you guessed it, one highly underrated character named Kaname Tōsen. Now, this character started as a cool-looking dude with a weird sense of justice, but he grew into a pretty deep character. Unfortunately, he was also written to lose most of the time just like most of the characters in Bleach. Anyway, let’s get into it. Kaname Tōsen is a captain of Gotei 13 who were the strongest shinigami in Soul Society. Well, they were mostly the strongest but that’s a story for another time. He had a strong sense of justice that never left him and served as a basis for many of the decisions he made throughout the episodes and chapters of the twisting tale of Bleach. His views of justice cut deep into some of the arguments the series pushes to the forefront. His views on revenge, life, and death impact quite a few characters and after going through some of his more prominent moments, it’s clear that he was more important than the series would lead you to believe. In addition to having one of the cleanest character designs in the series, his Zanpakuto is sound-based which means he has one of the more unique ones out there. He’s one of the most skilled characters in the show and he deserves a tad more recognition than he’s been given. If you ever watch or read Bleach, be sure to keep an eye out for him and you won’t be disappointed.
