Fall Into What’s New & Black On Netflix In September

  • Can you smell the Pumpkin Spice people!? September is on the way along with Uggs, back-to-school commercials, and a slew of Netflix programming to binge for cuddling season. Netflix has been acquiring new talent at a high clip for their network films and originals, so let’s see what’s popping for September!

    Movies Worth an Evening In

    Nappily Ever After

    NETFLIX FILMAvail. 9/21/18

    Nappily Ever After

Violet has it all: the perfect job, the perfect relationship and the perfect hair. Until she doesn’t. What happens when being perfect isn’t enough?

Nappily Ever After is an adaptation of the best-selling book by Trisha Thomas. Sanaa Lathan is back doing what she does best: pulling at your heartstrings in the blackest and most meaningful way possible. Drawing from Thomas’ “Nappily” series, this one is bound to give Black women professionals a whole ‘nother reason to turn up in the workplace.

I’m hyped to see the impact this movie will have on the culture. Sanaa Lathan has had a career predicated on her ability to bring the authenticity of the Black experience to any role she plays. The trailer alone looks like Angela Bassett’s arc in Waiting To Exhale, but in an office setting. I’m hoping something gets set on fire during a PowerPoint presentation.

    D.L. Hughley: Contrarian

    NETFLIX ORIGINAL Avail. 9/18/18

Comedian D.L. Hughley riffs on politics, Black Panther, his upbringing, and more in a rapid-fire stand-up show at Philadelphia’s Merriam Theater.

D.L. Hughley is a comedic living legend. From Def Comedy Jam to The Kings of Comedy, Hughley has been on point from day one. Contrarian is his third Netflix special and the first since 45 took office. It’s. Going. Down. D.L. is about to go off on everything and when he’s on the mic it’s usually a masterclass in stand up. Like that moment he and Dave Chapelle shut down the Def Comedy reunion (see below). Yeah, this is high on my hype list.

    Marvel Studios’ Black Panther

    Avail. 9/4/18

Go grab your auntie or uncle who hasn’t been to the movies in ten years but swears they’re a comic nerd. They’re going to want to see the dopest Black action movie since Action Jackson and Blade 2. Real talk, Black Panther is the magnum opus of Pan-African media representation right now and it’s awesome to have the film available to the masses on Netflix. This is why Netflix was invented – to bring this high quality storytelling to you *Bane voice* to the people! For the network, it’s also the opening for the Danai Gurira double-whammy alongside Season 8 of The Walking Dead (also available in September)!

    City of Joy

    Avail. 9/7/18

A documentary on women who’ve been sexually brutalized in war-torn Congo begin to heal at a center that helps them regain a sense of self and empowerment. This investigates how these women together turn their pain into power.

New Facebook Watch Series: Taking Up Space

    Avail. 9/23/18

This Netflix series examines the ways Black people create communities for ourselves as we dare to take up the space we deserve!

    Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time

    Avail. 9/25/18

Just in time for family watching over the holidays, Her Majesty Oprah Winfrey, Storm Reid, and the rest of the shiny cast bring the classic to your television screen.

Oprah Winfrey is Mrs. Which in Disney’s A WRINKLE IN TIME.

    Hold the Dark

    NETFLIX FILMAvail. 9/28/18

Summoned to a remote Alaskan village to search for wolves that took a local boy, a naturalist soon finds himself caught in a harrowing mystery.
