Halloween is a time where you can be anybody and a Nobody (hehe Kingdom Hearts humor, forgive me). It’s the season of upping your creative levels, reveling in the creepy, the crawly, the unsavory, the gorey, and the bloody. You can combine sexy with eye horror, or wholesomeness with knife-wielding tendencies, you name it!

It allows one to fully immerse themselves in a version (or versions) of themselves that they’d never dare to indulge in. One creator, I came across embodied this kind of artistic expression. BeatByDime is a MIND-BLOWING artist. Her creations range from classic horror callbacks to more contemporary anime characters, but they are all uniquely HER. I had the honor and pleasure of interviewing Dime this Halloween season, so please enjoy!

Black Nerd Problems: Please tell us about yourself! What’s your origin story and how has your Hero’s Journey been so far?

Dime: My name is Dime! I’m a 23yr old Musician, Artist & Creator from New York! I’ve been singing & making music for as long as I can remember, and I started getting into makeup in around 2012 for fun. I started seriously pursuing makeup in 2016, and it slowly just became a passion of mine alongside my music! I feel like my journey is truly just beginning, since I recently quit my full time retail job to pursue a full-time career in art! So far it’s been a dream, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds!

BNP: How would you describe your cosplay style? How do you create? Do you have any special projects coming up for the month of Halloween?

Dime: I feel like my cosplay style is— hard to describe, honestly. It’s like cosplay, but make it Dime. By that I mean it’s usually a mix of straight-up Cosplay & Glam, depending on what I’m doing. Personally, I always aim to make it as if the character stepped right out of the screen, or book — into real life, and I’ll use body paint, props, make-up & costuming to do that!

I usually create on a whim, pick a random character or look I feel like doing, no sketches or anything— Just making it up as I go unless it’s a part of a bigger project, like a visual or an extremely difficult look. I just try my best to take whatever I see in my head and share it with you all the best way I can!

Halloween is all the time for me, but I always try to go all out during the month of October! This year I’m doing my “DIMETOBER” series on Instagram where I post a new look every day, ranging from cosplay, all the way to sci-fi and gore.

BNP: Who or what inspires you?

Dime: I draw inspiration from any & everything! For my music, if I hear even one sound It instantly turns into a song! For make-up & art, I’m inspired by songs, shows, books, patterns, & colors in everyday life; anything that sparks something in my brain really!

I am most inspired by music though, sometimes when I hear songs it turns into this whole visual in my head—multiple scenes, looks, outfits, and I just have to bring it to life as soon as I can! I’m also heavily inspired by my supporters! Hearing my Goth Step Children tell me that I inspire them inspires me to do better and to keep going! It means the world to me.

BNP: What Halloween-based superpower would you want and why?

Dime: Honestly, I’d love to be able to turn into a bat! I feel like I would use it to make dramatic exits everywhere I went. Imagine? A huge puff of black smoke and I just turn into a bat and fly away? I also hate driving. Walking is cool, but I think flying places as a bat is much cooler.

Find Dime online on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter! She’s on Tik-Tok too! Buy her a coffee on Ko-Fi. See her other make-up and cosplay content that is SFW over on Onlyfans. Check out her Artist Pages On Spotify & Apple Music!
