It’s no secret that the CW has been hungry for spinoff franchises for some time. The pilot for the Supernatural-born Tribes just announced as dead on arrival. The Vampire Diaries managed to give its fans The Originals which has survived the first season and get renewed for a second. Back when CW was the WB, Smallville came pretty close when they gave rise to a pilot for a young Aquaman played by Justin Hartley (who was later cast as the Green Arrow on Smallville) that never saw the light of day. Not too long after, the Green Arrow’s popularity on the show generated talk at the studio about giving him his own show. However, that idea pretty much began and ended at the “talk” phase according to Hartley.
So, now in the wake of Arrow’s season two success, DC and the CW have not hesitated to capitalize on its popularity. An cameo appearance from Central City’s forensic investigator Barry Allen evolved into a spinoff series faster than a speeding bullet. (Seriously, Lindsay Lohan has gone to rehab and fallen off the wagon slower than this pilot got made.) Flash, starring Grant Gustin, is scheduled to debut this fall. Check out the first trailer that premiered during the season finale of Arrow.
