During the Oscars on Sunday, March 4th, Disney dropped a sneak peek trailer of Mary Poppins Returns. The original Mary Poppins appeared in 1964 with Julie Andrews as the beloved, umbrella-toting, no-nonsense taking nanny. In Mary Poppins Returns, we will be reunited with Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt) and the all-grown-up Banks children (Emily Mortimer and Ben Whishaw). Set 25 years after their first encounter, Mary Poppins Returns is said to take place in Depression Era London.
For those of us who are looking at the trailer with eyes full of nostalgia, I’ve got some good news from the new school. Hamilton’s own Lin-Manuel Miranda will co-star as Mary Poppins’ new sidekick. Taking the place of Dick Van Dyke’s chimney sweep, Lin is cast as streetlamp lighter Jack. The thought of Lin Manuel doing his thing in Mary Poppins Returns has me feeling all supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! The original Mary Poppins is known as musical glory, so if Lin has his hand on the soundtrack… he’s lighting up more than streetlamps.
The teaser trailer doesn’t give us a whole lot of details. What we do get are hints of nostalgia, like the kite (albeit tattered and worn) and Mary gliding in from the sky on what looks to be her carpet bag and iconic parrot head umbrella. Speaking of accessories, Mary Poppins Returns is giving us nanny realness in an updated cobalt blue cut out coat and red hat with the lipstick to match.
In paying homage to the original, some familiar faces are said to make a few appearances in Mary Poppins Returns. Be on the lookout for Dick Van Dyke and Angela Lansbury, but not Julie Andrews. The original nanny will not be a member of the sequel’s cast. I won’t be flying a kite anytime soon, but I will be singing along to the soundtrack as soon as it drops. Holidays can be hard, so Mary Poppins Returns may be the spoon full of sugar we need at the end of this year. I know that I’m already looking forward to it.
