The ‘War for Cybertron Trilogy-Earthrise’ Trailer Goes Off

It’s on and popping once again with the denizens of Cybertron with the release of the trailer for the next chapter in the War for Cybertron Trilogy- Earthrise. The creative team at Rooster Teeth are really plumbing the depths of the lore to give even more texture to this series. Warning: this trailer is designed for maximum hype for G1 (generation one, aka OG) Transformers fans and newcomers alike. Here is a rundown of the trailer and, as per usual, a rundown of the Easter eggs placed all through it.

War for Cybertron: Earthrise keeps the same dark and gritty texture that made Oliver Stone a household name in the 90s. Everybody still looks beat up as all hell. After the events of Siege, Megatron realizes he and the Decepticons are trapped on a dying Cybertron when Optimus and most of his crew dipped on the Ark. Megatron is trying to keep his regime afloat while trying to avoid Elita-1 and her John Wick-type death wish to take him out. Speaking of Elita-1, she’s seen being stalked by Shockwave rocking optic camouflage, and it’s quite creepy. Cut to: some huge figure piercing the clouds and a dogfight decisively won by the former Decepticon, Jetfire (aka Skyfire).

Scale and scope are increased dramatically for Earthrise. An indication of by how much arrives in the climax of the trailer with the boosters on the Ark firing up, a spacefaring Optimus opening the Matrix of Leadership, Megatron in conversation with Galvatron, a possible Nemesis Prime sighting (!!!) and the full view of Unicron – the planet-sized Transformer! Somewhere out there is a very happy fan, this is like the Disney+ announcements but from Netflix and Hasbro. Either way, the hype train has left the station going full steam ahead.

Now, for my favorite and what I came for: the Easter eggs and hidden gems from forty years of publication! First off, Rooster Teeth went digging in the comic book crates for wild material. Optimus, Wheeljack, and Bumblebee being led in shackles by The Mercenaries, a rogue faction of Cybertronians led by the two-timing Double Deal. The mercenaries are one throwback, but they lead us to a much deeper cut: The Quintessons! For those who don’t know, the Quintesson race created the Cybertronians characterized as having five faces. When the Ark boosters light, it’s right beside a spiral tower that eagle-eyed fans will know to be the ship of the Junkions.

For lovers of the 1986 cult classic Transformers: The Movie, the Matrix of Leadership, Galvatron, and Unicron in this trailer are a beacon of nerdy glory to come, Michael Bay be damned. The stage is set and the War for Cybertron – Earthrise is coming for all the 80s babies’ attention on December 30th, 2020 on Netflix.
