2025 is moving along, and we’re getting the heat in temperature and the season’s picks via anime, thanks to Crunchyroll. Between convention season, family reunions and vacations, we’re being blessed with a plethora of new series to fill our streaming plates as we ease into the second half of the year.
From the return of faves like DAN DA DAN to newer outings with bowling lovers, apocalyptic viruses, underdog characters and female friendships– here’s a quick sampling of what to expect from the highly anticipated series and returns and newer series making their way to our television screens this Summer!
TO BE HERO X, Anne Shirley, WITCH WATCH, One Piece, and more series will continue through the Summer 2025 Anime Season!
DAN DA DAN Season 2
Studio: (Science SARU)
Premiere Date: July 3, 2025, on Crunchyroll
Premise: Momo is a high school girl born into a family of spirit mediums. Her classmate Okarun is an occult fanatic. Encountering overwhelming and bizarre phenomena one after another, Momo awakens her hidden powers, and Okarun gains the power of a curse. They now set out to help Momo’s childhood friend Jiji, who is tormented by ghosts, by heading over to his home for exorcism… What will be the next bizarre phenomenon they face there!?
What to Expect: If I could borrow fellow contributor Mikkels’ words from our best of anime roundup from 2024: “Dan Da Dan is best described as equal parts horror fantasy, space opera, and two adorable teenage nerds who clearly think of the world of each other while also being completely incapable of communicating because they are in fact both teenagers and nerds. The pilot is wild, but the show dances through arcs effortlessly and strikes that oh so delicate balance between the humerus, the saccharine sweet, and the unexpectedly heartbreaking.” Season two brings more of Momo and Okarun (and friends!) and their wacky adventures as they equally both get stronger and face even more danger. “Otonoke” by Creepy Nuts may have become a global hit and yet it looks like we’re getting a brand new banger of an opening song for this new season!
Takopi’s Original Sin
Studio: ENISHIYA
Premiere Date: June 27, 2025, on Crunchyroll
Premise: A Happy alien, Takopi, lands on Earth with one mission: to spread happiness! When he meets Shizuka, a lonely fourth grader, he vows to bring back her smile using his magical Happy Gadgets. But as he uncovers the pain in her life, Takopi learns that true happiness may require more than gadgets.
What to Expect: Okay, I’m going to slightly hint that you will probably cry and probably find something wholesome to think back on–when you get into watching this one. That’s all. No spoilers from me. This one will be a limited series on CR with six or so episodes. If the trailer hasn’t grabbed you and intrigued you and you’re familiar with the manga, walk into watching this with a cheerful heart cause you’re going to be wrecked. BYE!
Gachiakuta
Studio: (Bones Film)
Premiere Date: July 6, 2025, on Crunchyroll
Premise: In a floating city where the rich discard their waste—and people—Rudo is framed for murder and thrown into the Pit, where a hellscape of mutated garbage beasts dwell. To survive, he must wield a new power and join the rogue Cleaners. Rudo doesn’t just aim to battle monsters, but the corrupt who cast him into Hell.
What to Expect: oh. OH. A critique on *checks notes* on class systems, the value of labor and defining humanity, Gachiakuta arrives as one of the most anticipated series that fans have been clamoring for–and for good reason! The mangaka of the original series has an incredibly interesting story that I had to share this video on–a fan who basically became a successor–all hail female mangaka!
Nyaight of the Living Cat
Studio: (OLM)
Premiere Date: July 6, 2025, on Crunchyroll
Premise: Run! The Adorable Cats Are Here! In 20XX, the world is dominated by cats. A virus which turns anyone who touches a cat into a cat has spread into a worldwide nyandemic. Cats rub against people, turning them into cats. Can humanity fight their urge to pet cats to survive in this cat-ridden world? The momentously catful comic is getting a TV anime in 2025!
What to Expect: Look, we’re already living in actual apocalypse™️, here’s an actual fictional one that won’t do me any more harm and will be entertaining off jump. Beloved, I’m not going to lie: Nyaight of the Living Cat sounds silly as hell. Like Silly turned up to one hundred, and everyone knows that I am a silly person. I am looking forward to some silliness, some true comedy, and this upcoming anime that just might unite all the horror and cats fans across fandoms! I LOVE that OLM, the animation studio behind bringing the anime adaptation of my favorite The Apothecary Diaries is handling this project! The End is Nyaigh!
Turkey! Time to Strike
Studio: (BAKKEN RECORD)
Premiere Date: July 8, 2025, on Crunchyroll
Premise: Mai Otonashi is a second-year student and the captain of the Ikkokukan High School Bowling Club, and recently, she’s struggled to win. Whenever she scores a Turkey, three consecutive strikes, she follows it up with an unbeatable split—the Snake Eyes. This is the story of Mai, Rina, Sayuri, Nozomi, and Nanase as they fight, fall, and rise again in pursuit of victory in the final days of summer.
What to Expect: I feel like every season there is an extremely niche anime series that pops out on the scene that may or may not be an sports anime in disguise. Let me explain: I watched this trailer and someone in the Black Nerd Problems Discord server said–“This is JUST for ME”. You know, I haven’t bowled in forever and just looking at the trailer has me nostalgic and also curious to see if I still got it. Also? The friendship/competition threads of the plot have e locked in–AND? An anime focusing on teenage girls and their goals to be great? Count me in!
Solo Camping for Two
Studio: (SynergySP)
Premiere Date: July 10, 2025, on Crunchyroll
Premise: Gen Kinokura just wanted to enjoy his peaceful solo camping trips—no distractions, no problems. Enter Shizuku Kusano, a clueless but enthusiastic newbie who crashes his campsite (literally). Now, this bothered outdoorsman is stuck teaching her the ropes. Laughs, mishaps, and heartwarming moments await this duo-camp adventure under the stars!
What to Expect: I love the opposites attract (in love, in friendships, etc) trope in anime. Let me catch you up to speed: in most cases, there is something so charming about the camp/outdoor lifestyle genres that anime keeps supplying us with (Because Laid Back Camp is a global treasure). I am loving all the YouTube video comments jokingly telling us in one way or another that “we really went from solo leveling to solo camping” (Thank you @Firefist0123) I’m looking forward to some laughs and some outdoors instruction because my YouTube algorithm has caught on to me watching camping videos and like, hell yeah. Solo Camping for Two, I’ll watch it.
Hotel Inhumans
Studio: (Bridge)
Premiere Date: July 6, 2025, on Crunchyroll
Premise: The best hotels must meet certain standards, including the finest cuisine, ways to relax, and entertainment. Of course, they also need the best selection of weapons, reliable ways to falsify one’s identity, and ways to dispose of evidence. In this hotel at the border of death stand two concierges, Ikuro Hoshi and Sara Haizaki. What kinds of requests will the assassins have for them next?
What to Expect: I KNOW everyone is making John Wick/The Continental jokes and I won’t hold you–get them out. The title has thrown all of us off: Marvel fanboys (gender neutral) were wondering if special powered folks were involved, the fans of fantasy were anticipating non-human characters in a hotel (didn’t we get that last season???) while Assassination Classroom stans are like, “Close enough, welcome back.” Either way, I’m love stories with assassins and I’m anticipating the first episode!
With You and the Rain
Studio: (Lesprit)
Premiere Date: July 5, 2025, on Crunchyroll
Premise: On a rainy day, Fuji meets a cute critter posing as a dog and offering an umbrella and a cue card that says, “Please take me home,” and she can’t resist. With this dog-poster’s quirky charm and mysterious ways, life together becomes a heartwarming adventure of friendship and shared seasons.
What to Expect: Oh, I remember the manga for this series! With You and the Rain is a charming, wholesome slice of life vibes type of series that is simply the story of a young woman who comes across a tanuki on her way home and brings it home. Tanuki–actual animals perhaps better known as Japanese racoon dogs are popular creatures in Japanese folklore and even animation, they are known for their mischievous natures and troublesome interactions with people. The tanuki which is passed off as a pet, a dog settles into his new home hilariously and is well loved by most. This is a simply low-stakes, fun, and pretty wholesome series that brings just enough to the table for those looking for something lighthearted, which may be the escapism, distraction and fun you may be looking for.
Onmyo Kaiten Re:Birth Verse
Studio: (david production)
Premiere Date: July 2, 2025, on Crunchyroll
Premise: Narihira Takeru is a delinquent who often thinks about Tsukimiya, the girl who appears in his dreams. After an unexpected accident, Takeru finds himself in a parallel universe, and the world that Tsukimiya lives in. When Takeru and Tsukimiya are slain by a monster, he awakens again and realizes he has leapt through time. Now, Takeru must train with Abe Seimei to fight for Tsukimiya’s life
What to Expect: ISEKAI. I’m not tired of the genre yet. And we might have a more “classic shonen action type of series” when it comes to this newer entry in the genre. Onmyo Kaiten Re:Birth Verse looks messy, chaotic, colorful and a wild ride. I’m watching. How about you?
Kaiju No. 8 Season 2
Studio: (Production I.G)
Premiere Date: July 19, 2025, on Crunchyroll
NOTE: Hoshina’s Day Off @ 7:00 AM PT (Live Broadcast) and 7:30 AM PT (SVOD) AKA The Special Episode from the omnibus film ‘Kaiju No 8: Mission Recon’.
Premise: Thanks to Isao Shinomiya, Kafka Hibino avoids being turned into a weapon. As new recruits head to their posts, Kafka meets Gen Narumi, the strongest man in the Defense Force and leader of the First Division. Kafka embraces the power of Kaiju No. 8 to force Gen to recognize his strength. Meanwhile, Kaiju No. 9 lurks in the shadows as the greatest threat the Defense Force has faced awaits.
What to Expect: So we knew that Kaiju No. 8 would be continuing when the second season was announced. BET. BNP Readership may be tired of me yapping away about my love for Kaiju No. 8–How you read Why Kaiju No. 8 Should Be In Your Anime Spring 2024 Watchlist? Look forward to newer faces, newer headhunters and newer characters in the fight against Kaiju’s for dominance over Japan. So excited to see so many of our faves and Kafka shining on a team–ever closer to his dream.
See You Tomorrow at the Food Court
Studio: Atelier Pontdarc
Premiere Date: July 7, 2025, on Crunchyroll
Premise: Meet Wada, who gives off an unapproachable vibe, and Yamamoto, who strikes fear into those around her because of her looks. Though the two girls attend separate high schools, they meet up at a shopping center’s food court almost every day. Take a little peek at the laid-back afternoons Wada and Yamamoto share as they reflect on the ups and downs of high school life together.
What to Expect: Come through slice-of-life anime! This is another limited series with six episodes coming to us this summer. I love seeing teen girls find safe places around them and in other people. And as wholesome and simple as this premise reads and sounds, I would not be against a few reveal that flips the entire narrative on its head. Just saying. It has happened to me before!
