Writer: Brian Buccellato / Artist: Toni Infante / Image Comics
It’s been a long time since a panel gave me chills, but this comic gave me chills. From the opening scene we’re reminded that we’re in it now — we’re in the muck, with more frequent appearances of demonic figures than ever before. And you have to hand it to Toni Infante because he kills it. Simple, subtle, a calmly scary. The opening scene of Sons of the Devil #13 is my favorite sequence of the series thus far.
And when it comes to shit hitting the fan, the opening scene is just the tip of the iceberg as the penultimate issue accelerates towards the finish. Everything we expected to happen is taking place at the right time — following so much anticipation it felt like the literary equivalent of edging — as well as a surprise or two I didn’t see coming. The breakneck pace makes this an insatiable page-turner, and when you reach the end, you’ll only want more. I want the finale right the fuck now. I also want to go into further detail, but there’s so much packed inside the issue that any detail would borderline as a spoiler.
Overall, Sons of the Devil #13 makes your pulse race as you sit at the edge of your seat waiting to see how it all ends. Issue #14 can’t come soon enough.
