Runaways #5 Review

Writer: Rainbow Rowell / Artist: Kris Anka / Marvel

The Runaways team is out here lookin like Mako, Bolin and the gang after Zaheer had Korra chained up on the torture rack then laid up in a wheelchair for months. The team is scattered. They failed to recruit Molly back and lost Gert when she decided to stay with the only member of the team that’s still kind of her age. But lil sis has been questioning exactly how trustworthy shady grams is! She out here pluckin hair out of Victor’s head, engineering cats to read minds, and being an all-around creep. Molly can see the pain in Gert’s eyes. To her it’s only been a week since her best friends were all inseparable, so the bruiser comes up with a plan to escape and make their runaway family whole again.

Nico is back on her Bellatrix, posted up at her place doing her usual thing. Wondering why no one in her family lived long enough to tell her about this Staff of One curse she now has to live with. Sulking about the team not being back together. Getting a visit from Karolina!? You don’t want to miss the nail-biting conversation and interaction these two have. Just know they’re alone, sitting on Nico’s bed with the tension so thick you need the sharpest object known to man to cut it.

It was great knowing Victor has been playing dead cuz Chase was talkin all the smack about Ultron’s son, while trying to revive him at the same damn time. The dynamic between these two is amazing.

Outshining the TV Show

It’s happening, y’all. Rainbow Rowell is writing her ass off and the gang is getting back together! We’re so close!!! Kris Anka is on a vivid rampage. Every single page of this new series is beautifully drawn and all of our heroes look better than ever. While the TV adaptation does work in many ways, Anka and Rowell are performing a remarkable feat with this Runaways revival and every comic book fan needs to understand how great these first five issues have been.
