Okay, I am SO HYPED UP to be writing about this cosplayer! Deezumaki has got the BEST Demon Slayer cosplays. Just, freaking awesome. Their Tanjiro and Nezuko cosplays are vibrant and sooooo pretty that when they popped up on my news feed, they definitely made my day a thousand times better! I was lucky enough to be granted an interview with them, so please do enjoy!
BNP: Please tell us about yourself! What’s your origin story and how has your Hero’s Journey been so far?
Dee: Well, my name is Dee. I’m a 19-year-old nonbinary (soon to be 20!), content creator, cosplayer, and voice actor. I’ve always had a love for anime and cartoons since I was a kid. My dad used to watch DBZ and Sailor Moon religiously. I first got into cosplay when I was around 14 and got to actually dress up as my favorite anime character at the time [Undertaker from Black Butler] with a few friends during Halloween. At that time I didn’t have a lot of friends who were as interested in cosplaying, so that year was really fun for me personally. And after that, my love for dressing up as fictional characters kinda skyrocketed.
I got to meet a lot of fellow Black cosplayers along the way which REALLY made my experience in all the areas where I make content a lot more tolerable. Cause the cosplay community and many other communities such as gaming, streaming, and even VA can be rather uninviting to POC. So it was rather nice to have a support system of fellow Black content creators to just simply have fun with. I’m not sure how the rest of my journey in these communities will go, but I’m excited about what’s to come!
BNP: How would you describe your cosplay aesthetic? How do you create? Do you have any special projects coming up for the month of Halloween?
Dee: I feel that my cosplay aesthetic is very colorful. I love having vibrant colors in my cosplays and editing the saturation just to make them pop more. I just love me some colorful layouts. Usually, my creative process comes from various makeup posts I keep in my Pinterest folder. I also like to keep a folder of Black hairstyles to see if I can incorporate them in cosplays. Like with my recent Tanjiro cosplay! I’ve been looking through my folders again for some upcoming Halloween looks like Ciel Phantomhive from Black Butler and Misa Amane from Death Note. I have a bunch more plans for this month, but those are for later.
BNP: Are you a more scary Halloween or cutesy Halloween or mystical Halloween person?
Dee: I feel like I’m all three. I adore a scary and spooky looks, but I also love whimsical and cute. I like to dabble in all the looks. They’re so much fun to look at and really gives me a boost of inspiration.
BNP: If you could be the hero in any Halloween or scary film, which one would it be and why?
Dee: Ahh, that’s kinda hard cause I’m a big horror buff. But I’d say Gretel from Gretel and Hansel and the twin witches from Twitches. I LOVE witches. The magic, the history, the lore of it all. God, I just love it. I chose Gretel because of her character development of discovering her powers. Just imagining gaining witchy powers and being able to go off and discover them for yourself sounds so cool. That’s also how I feel about Twitches. It’s more of a whimsical fantasy Halloween film, but still, finding out you’re a witch with powers. God, that sounds so awesome.
