Captain America and The Mighty Avengers #6 Review

Writer:Al Ewing / Artist:Luke Ross / Marvel Comics

It all comes to a head this issue as we discover the mystery behind the Beyond Corporation. We discover how Jason Quantrell in his greed for the latest best seller for technology to put on the market was basically abducted by the Beyond Corporation. These cats are just about fucking around with people, mostly for sport at times. Back in the present “Jason Quantrell” tells Luke & Jessica Cage his plan on how best to be a dick to Earth before sending them off into space, telling them to ask Monica about how they do. Sam Wilson, She-Hulk and Kaluu now have to face these monsters only to realize that two of them are there team mates. Shit gets real heavy when we see that Sam gets cornered and has to take down these cats on his own.

Ewing does a smart thing in using The Beyond Corporation from Nextwave. Nextwave was a beloved series of Marvel that was one of the most hilarious books they put on the stands in years. When Blue Marvel rescues the Cages and they tell Monica about what happened, we see Rambeau go back to her ways remembering her time in Nextwave. Ewing is making that part of Monica’s history cannon and taking what was ridiculous and outlandish in a more serious light for the readers currently. Nextwave is no longer just a funny book but an event that we’re seeing as having been written off by those characters that didn’t live it. We’re now seeing Monica forced back into her old ways and saying, “fuck it”.

I am all for this, we got natural hair Monica back (how you ask? Shhhhh-shh-shhh, not now man). If the whole perm angle was just for this moment then it was well worth the wait man. Ross’ art this issue was pretty good as well. The detail he puts into the character’s facial expressions as well as the shading of the shadows over them takes some getting use to. This book is still good man. This might be the slowest issue we’ve had thus far (including volume 1) and that is bound to happen in any book eventually. However, what is being done in this incarnation of Mighty Avengers as well as with the members of this team is still the work that the lawd wnated us to have.
