On September 29th, nerds from all over the country will be traveling to Baltimore, Maryland for the East Coast’s first ever costume play ballroom-style event. The CosGala is a grand-scale extravaganza where you can expect an all-night bar, a gourmet buffet dinner, a cosplay contest with a prize from Arda Wigs, and DJ Taylor Senpai (who will be dishing out geektastic tunes). Who wouldn’t want to stun, daze, and dish up the most extravagantly fancy looks while representing their favorite fandoms? SIGN. ME. UP. But in all seriousness, The CosGala is an idea in the making, created from the combined love of nerds; Pure energy made up of passion for the community. This night is to bring together a collective in a way that hasn’t been experienced before. At least, not like this. I was able to speak with Tranquil Ashes Cosplay, one of the board members of The CosGala, so please enjoy this quick insight of the upcoming event of the coming season!
Black Nerd Problems: FIRST OFF: First anime you ever binged and your favorite sci-fi heroine?
Tranquil Ashes: As every proper Moonie, I binged watched Sailor Moon whenever I had the opportunity. I even have some of the first Sailor Moon movies on VHS. My favorite Sci-Fi heroine is a much tougher question. One of my earliest favorites however is Captain Janeway. She was the first leading female captain in Star Trek. She was tough, smart, and a complete badass!
BNP: Please tell us a bit about what the CosGala is and how it was created?
Tranquil: The CosGala is a Cosplay Masquerade Ball that will be held on September 29, 2018 in Baltimore, Maryland. It’ll be a night of prizes, music, dancing, and fun. Our DJ – DJ Taylor Senpai — has spin at your favorite con after parties (Momocon and AwesomeCon).
We deeply encourage the sharing of creative passion and most importantly — fun. We are here to bring you intimate and extravagant experiences, not just events. Cosplay is for everyone, and we cordially invite you all to join us.
BNP: The CosGala Team is comprised of battle-hardened convention attendees and cosplayers: How did this help you in managing this entire affair?
Tranquil: It’s always good to have people in your corner who are share the same interests and creative space as yourself. All of the ladies on my board (Pasteldotz Cosplay, Devilish Vixen, and CC the Greek Geek) have been such a help. With their collective talents they’ve helped push this project to where it is now. I am truly grateful for their support.
BNP: Are there any socio-political messages intertwined with this event?
Tranquil: The CosGala is founded on the fundamental ideals of unity, uplifting Cosplay, and improving the quality of spirit in the community. We wish to foster and encourage the craft of Cosplay in a safe, inclusive environment. We also recognize the importance of our skills, and the influence it can have on others in our communities. To share with others be it knowledge, networking, a helping hand, or support. The CosGala brings with it the passion of the craft and the desire to share in that passion with others. We support creatives. It’s the spark that will lead us to a better future.
BNP: What are you most excited for? What do you want people to know the most about this?
Tranquil: I am most excited to see everyone in their outfits having fun! We really do advocate for the coming together of creatives. The CosGala has hosted two small events (Fandom Night and a Black Panther screening) and we watched our audience and interest in our event swell. It’s a night of fun and something unique most haven’t done before. I’m looking most forward of spending the night with you all.
